An intranet built by Squiz for the Department of Primary Industries in Australia has been named as one of the years 10 best intranets in the prestigious Nielsen Norman Group Report : Intranet Design Annual 2008.
The award proves just how powerful and flexible MySource Matrix Open Source CMS is when it comes to building intranets. To win the award, the intranet CMS had to handle very diverse requirements such as:
- Company and industry news
- Integrating internal and external information sources
- Editorial control of the intranet homepage
- Keeping the intranet up-to-date
- Induction of new employees
- Consistent navigation
- Multilingual intranets; supporting international employees
- Multimedia and video on intranets
- Data visualization
- Community
- Collaboration tools and discussion boards
- Employee self service
- Special intranet tools and areas for high-level executives
- Internal weblogs
- Intranet search
- Development process for intranet redesigns
- Staffing of intranet teams; where they report in the organization
- Updating and maintaining standards and guidelines for intranet design
- Intranet branding
- Promoting new intranet features
- Polls
- Staff directory and employee profile pages
- Corporate calendars
- Personalization
- Alerts
We've also built intranets for companies like Informa, Future Publishing and Cambridge Antibody Technology. And we're noticing a far more savvy approach to building and maintain them. In particular, the following areas are getting far greater attention:
- Increased personalization
- Integration of information sources, often resulting in a single "one-stop shopping" page
- Emphasis on mission-critical applications and information (such as sales targets)
- Improved event and project calendars
- Special sections to help orient new employees
- Prominent display of stock quotes and other financial information
- Integration of external and company news, often in the form of customizable feeds
- Integration of alerts with the main intranet to inform users of important messages
- Redesigned and improved search features, which often went from horrible to good and generated ecstatic user feedback
Of course, we apply all of this to our own intranet which runs our entire business...
But back to the award! Congratulations to the Department of Primary Industries and everyone who worked on the project.
