How Squiz delivered an all-new intranet for Informa within a four-week deadline, using the capabilities of its MySource Matrix Open Source CMS.
All organisations rely on well-informed and highly-engaged employees. Informa, a leading international provider of information and services for the academic, scientific, professional and commercial business communities, is no different.
The Challenge
Informa's intranet, connecting 8,000 employees at 150 offices in more than 40 countries and providing a central hub for work-critical information, was falling down on the job.
The site was difficult to manage and administer, and because it was un-engaging and lacked functionality it was little used. The system, which had been built from scratch entirely in Java, also lacked the flexibility to add new features.
The Solution
Squiz prides itself on a ‘can do’ attitude and drew deep on that to deliver a new intranet based on its MySource Matrix Open Source CMS with open source technology against a four-week deadline.
Squiz developed a new look and feel for the site, then migrated existing functionality and about 2,000 pages of content across to the new system, paring down the architecture and reorganising data.
Next, functionality was improved, such as enhancing job advertisements and developing the resource area. Search facilities were also improved by refining weighting options on the metadata.
The Outcome with MySource Matrix Open Source CMS
Squiz hit that four week deadline – impressive stuff – and according to Jonathan Ferro, Global Web Specialist at Informa, the technology ticks all the boxes: “That you can create a page one day and remove it or change it the next as you require is very attractive. It offers the flexibility to respond quickly to your business environment and needs.”
The new intranet has created a buzz across the organisation and driven up user engagement. Planned features include eCards and a MySpace-style service where employees can post their qualifications and skills which are searchable by the rest of the organisation.
Further down the line there’s talk of customising content according to, for example, users' location. “That's the great thing about the technology, anything it possible,” added Jonathan.
