How MySource Matrix Open Source CMS helped the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) achieve its aim of a robust new website with scope for growth.
The RCN has been the voice of nursing in the UK for nearly a century, promoting the interests of nurses and patients on a wide range of healthcare issues. With 400,000 members, it is the largest professional union of nursing staff in the world.
The Challenge
The organisation’s website – a vital tool in communicating with its membership – prior to relaunch contained more than 65,000 pages of specialist content. And the goal set Squiz was to consolidate this content in one place, while handing off publication roles from a central web team to a network of local editors, some of whom had limited web know-how. Any solution also had to be scaleable to accommodate future functionality.
The Solution
The answer for these different needs was the MySource Matrix Open Source Content Management System (CMS). Leon Hughes, Web Manager for the RCN, said: “The main attraction of the product is that it’s open source, has great core functionality, supports social networking and is a living, continuously developing tool.” Leon praised the partnership approach of Squiz and its post-sales support.
MySource Matrix provides the space for hundreds of online communities, blogging and knowledge-sharing wikis, and can support a range of content types, including audio-visual and podcasting.
The Outcome with MySource Matrix Open Source CMS
The new site includes a members’ database that can be self-administered allowing users to update their personal details online. And transactional features have been added so members can join the RCN, renew their memberships, buy publications and book events.
The self-service aspect of the new site has been embraced by members (user approval ratings top 95 per cent) and content editors have quickly gained in confidence. “MySource Matrix presents us with plenty of scope for future development,” added Leon.
