"Re-imagining IT" at the Gartner Symposium 2011 in Barcelona
This week, Squiz are at the 2011 Gartner Symposium and ITxpo in Barcelona. As well as sponsoring the event and exhibiting in the ITxpo, we're also attending the conference sessions to get the low-down from the Gartner Analysts on the latest developments in IT leadership.
The theme of this year's Symposium is "Re-imagine IT: Leading from the Front". This theme focuses on the need for organisations and IT industry leaders to "re-imagine how new technologies can be embraced and used for competitive advantage."
Gartner have presented three key areas to the "Re-imagine IT" theme:
Social, Mobile Organisations
Re-imagine your organisation to reflect the new world where everyone is connected, all the time, everywhere. The prevalence of social media and mobile in people's personal and business lives are key drivers which are forcing us to re-imagine organisations. Squiz are well prepared to deal with this, we use responsive design to deliver optimised web experiences on any device, and leverage existing social capabilities to engage effectively.

Simplify
Simplifying the delivery and operation of IT for its users is a subject close to the heart of Squiz. Simplification is not about removing complexity: it's about dealing with complexity well and improving the ways in which complex information is accessed and communicated.
Squiz's editorial interfaces are heralded for simplifying the management of online channels, whilst Squiz Analytics provides actionable feedback directly to users to simplify the process of optimisation. We’re also increasingly delivering digital solutions which build on existing data and content repositories, from SharePoint to bespoke systems, to create more efficient and simplified user interactions with this information.

Creative Destruction
The third area is "creative destruction" - the process of re-imagining existing IT systems. An average organisation spend 70% of their IT budget supporting existing systems, leaving limited resources to fund innovation and new initiatives which could help the organisation to achieve a competitive advantage. Identifying systems which can be culled or repurposed for the new world of IT will benefit most organisations. At Squiz we use our own tool, Squiz Roadmap, to help us to manage the need for innovation in a social, collaborative manner.
The theme suggests a real need for organisations, now more than ever, to take stock of their IT systems to ensure that they are delivering results. New technologies, new structures and new approaches to IT can help to maximise the opportunity for the organisation to achieve a competitive advantage.
