The Great Open Source Web CMS Debate: Presentation by Richard Morgan of the V&A Museum
As part the Squiz USA launch seminar, held in New York on June 17th, we invited Richard Morgan, Web Technical Manager of the Victoria & Albert Museum, to speak at the event. Richard’s presentation outlined the massive content migration challenges that faced him when the V&A decided to switch content management systems, focusing on the requirements of the museum and highlighting the reasons for choosing an Open Source CMS.
V&A Museum: Migrating Web Content Management Systems
The key points in the presentation included:
- A mixture of Open Source and commercial offers were considered
- Statement of requirement focus was on the company, not an endless list of CMS features
- Could we import items into the system without much help?
- A good CMS is not an end in itself
- It’s OK to be complex, not complicated
- An Open Source model where functionality can be extended delivers incremental improvements to users
- Buying CMS “software” is just taking a hit before getting to work
